Arguably, The Sims is one of EA's most lucrative properties, which could be attributed to how many spin-off games there are and all the DLC available for each mainline title. The Sims 4, as the most consistently updated game of the series right now, is no exception. But just how profitable is it?

The Sims 4's popularity is largely due to the fact that it's the most recent entry in The Sims franchise, and given that there's yet to be so much as a teaser for an eventual new Sims 5 game, it's likely that this will be the case for a while longer. Add in the fact that there's an expansive list of features still unavailable in The Sims 4, particularly those that were featured in other Sims games, and it becomes even more probable that EA plans on remaining focused on updating The Sims 4 as opposed to working on future entries in the franchise.

There are currently a total of 11 expansion packs for The Sims 4, on top of 10 game packs, 18 stuff packs, and 4 kits introduced in early 2021. Given how much content there is to choose from, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise for Sims 4 fans to learn that the game made $879 per minute on average in 2020. It's possible that this number could be higher by the end of 2021, but an overall average isn't likely to be collected until the end of the year.

Why The Sims 4 Makes So Much Money

This data was revealed by NetBet, which examined how much revenue the top-grossing AAA games make per minute on its official website. The site looked at how much profit The Sims 4 earned in 2020 and then divided it by how many minutes there are in a year. As digital downloads, DLC, and microtransactions become more common in games - despite the player outcry in response - even free-to-play titles become more lucrative as they veer toward pay-to-win status. While The Sims 4 may not be free-to-play, nor does it contain explicit microtransactions, it does offer a wealth of digitally downloadable content and expansion packs. In addition, frequent base game sales and bundles of expansion packs help further incentivize additional spending on the game.

The Sims 4 was met with controversy upon its launch, thanks largely to its relative lack of content. The open-world and customizable color palettes of The Sims 3 were entirely missing, as were staple features like pools and toddlers. While the game has expanded significantly since 2014, thanks partly to the release of free updates, many major improvements are locked into expansion packs that require extra money to purchase. As of late 2020, it cost around $800 to purchase all available content for The Sims 4, as many of the game's expansions are sold from anywhere between $20 to $40 USD. Given how many additional packs have been released in 2021, including the most recent, Cottage Living, it's likely that The Sims 4 is now making more money than ever.
